WAYSIDE MYSTERY



No cars are screeching to 
a halt today to see the 
stone (even if it could 
be seen) on the wayside 
where vines now climb,
bearing a message some
heavy hammer and
tired arm chiselled
onto a rock's face
one hot summer day
before the Great War, 
reminding us what
someone thought it
important to remember,
that "nearby," on the 
Sandy Hill Plain, a 
training field and
government store-
houses once stood in 
1720, possibly the
biggest news ever
on River Road, 
besides the
river.
