“A feeling of happiness came to me when I was walking
home, kicking little pebbles as they came along.”
-Burr at 10
We stood facing stonewalls dividing field from field,
by stones dividing us from those who've traveled on,
and marked her grave with "pebbles that came along,"
then tears and silence fell between the earth and sky,
with stories meant to pull her back across the line,
and mend hearts still torn in many-chambered grief,
all this on a birthday that nearly cleaves the month,
while we stood, zippered up against the growing chill,
a front passed through, fall gone, winter coming in.
