In the Victory Garden on the
Fenway, defeat and decay;
it's already late October,
the first cold autumn day.
The gardeners stand around
helpless, looking very old,
like bystanders at a fire,
shuffling in the cold.
They stand around watching
the ruins of what they sowed,
as winter comes collecting
on what the spring had owed.
