TO A VERMONT SCHOLAR
for Laura Mattison
All hail the conqueror of U.V.M.
who laid siege with only book and pen,
and not that she might spoils take,
but rather for pure learning's sake.
We tender high congratulation
on your Green Mountain graduation,
victorious, now your life commences,
to serve by laying waste the fences
that divide a world so ill-divided,
that somehow all may be provided.
I say without the least concern,
conqueror, please both teach and learn,
and heal this earth, a suffering sight,
to it, to you, bring healing light.
